Yoga Alliance teacher training in Denmark: what RYT 200 means
Upcoming yoga teacher trainings in Copenhagen
By yum · Updated 3 November 2026
RYT 200 stands for Registered Yoga Teacher at the 200-hour level. It’s a registration with Yoga Alliance that you apply for yourself once you’ve completed a full 200-hour yoga teacher training at a school registered as an RYS 200. You create a profile on yogaalliance.org, the school confirms your training, and you pay an application fee and annual dues. In Denmark it’s voluntary. It isn’t a government licence.
Here’s what the letters mean, how to register, and what changes in 2027.
In short
- RYS 200 is the school. RYT 200 is you, once you’ve registered.
- You don’t become an RYT automatically. You apply yourself after you get your certificate.
- According to Yoga Alliance’s own guide, it’s a $50 application fee and $65 a year in dues. Always check the current prices.
- You can’t add up several short courses. It has to be one complete 200-hour training from the same school.
- From 2027 Yoga Alliance is changing its system. The 200-hour requirement stays, but there are new steps.
What is Yoga Alliance?
Yoga Alliance is an international non-profit based in the US. It keeps a voluntary register of yoga schools and yoga teachers, and it sets standards for what a training should include. It isn’t a Danish authority.
“Yoga teacher” isn’t a protected title in Denmark. You can teach without being registered. But many studios ask for a training from a registered school, and RYT is a familiar language across countries. It makes it easier to explain what you’ve learned, wherever you teach.

What do RYS 200, RYT 200 and E-RYT 200 mean?
- RYS 200 (Registered Yoga School): The school is registered to train teachers at the 200-hour level.
- RYT 200 (Registered Yoga Teacher): You, once you’ve completed a 200-hour training at an RYS 200 and registered yourself.
- E-RYT 200 (Experienced Registered Yoga Teacher): You, once you’ve taught at least 1,000 hours over at least two years after your training.
There are also 300-hour and 500-hour levels for those who want to go further. That’s another conversation.
How do you register as an RYT 200?
This is how Yoga Alliance describes the process in its guide to the RYT application:
- Gather your documents. Your training’s start and end dates, a digital copy of your certificate and the name of the school.
- Create a profile. Go to yogaalliance.org, choose “Join” and follow the prompts.
- Choose “Teacher”. Once you’re logged in, select that you’re a teacher.
- Enter your training. Add your start and end dates. The end date must match the date on your certificate. Search for your school and select it.
- Upload your certificate and send the request.
- Wait for the school. The school has to confirm that you completed the training. According to Yoga Alliance, this can take up to 14 days.
- Pay. Once the school has confirmed, log back in and pay. The guide lists a one-time $50 fee and $65 a year, so $115 in the first year.
- Review the school. That’s the last step of the registration.
You pay the fees directly to Yoga Alliance, not to the school. Prices and steps can change, so always check yogaalliance.org before you start.
What does it take to keep your registration?
Once you’re an RYT, you keep learning and teaching. Under the current rules, you need 75 hours of continuing education every three years. At least 45 of them are teaching, and at least 30 are courses or training.
From the 2030 cycle, Yoga Alliance says the requirement becomes 30 hours every three years for RYTs and 40 hours for E-RYTs.
What’s changing at Yoga Alliance in 2027?
Yoga Alliance is reshaping its system from 2027. According to its page on the new credential model:
- The 200-hour and 500-hour training requirements aren’t going away.
- The credential and the membership become two separate things.
- Teachers who are already registered need to pass a 40-question online assessment on teaching, ethics and safety by 31 December 2027. The pass mark is 75%, with two attempts.
- Yoga philosophy is deliberately not on the assessment. That belongs in the training.
Exactly how it will work for new teachers who graduate in 2027 may still change. So check Yoga Alliance’s page when you finish your training.
How do you check whether a school is registered?
Search for the school in Yoga Alliance’s directory on yogaalliance.org. And ask the school directly:
- Are you an RYS 200 right now?
- Will my certificate carry your name so it can be found in Yoga Alliance’s system?
- How are the 200 hours split at your school?
That last question is worth asking wherever you end up. If you’re comparing schools, read How to choose a yoga teacher training in Copenhagen: 8 questions to ask.
Do you need Yoga Alliance to teach in Denmark?
No. There are good teachers and good schools without the stamp. Yoga Alliance isn’t the only proof of quality. When we hire teachers ourselves, we also look at where they trained, how much they’ve practised and taught, and how they are with people.
But if you want to teach abroad, on retreats or in studios that ask for RYT, it’s good to have. And it gives you a shared standard to measure your training against.

- yum is a Registered Yoga School (RYS®200) with Yoga Alliance.

- The training is built from around 150 hours with the teachers and 50 hours of self-practice. That structure is approved by Yoga Alliance.
- The manual is 170 pages and approved by Yoga Alliance.
- When you’ve met the requirements and passed the exam, you get a certificate showing that you trained at an RYS200 school. With it, you can apply to become an RYT, and later an E-RYT.
- After the training, you get a next-steps guide and a follow-up chat.
- Two groups in 2027: Winter/spring 16 January–2 May (weekends only) and Summer Intensive 3 July–15 August. Same content, same certificate.
