You choose a yoga teacher training by asking the same questions of every school you’re considering, and of yourself. Why do you want to do it? Does the format fit your life? Do you like the style? How are the hours split, what’s included in the price, who teaches, how are you assessed, and what happens afterwards? Then take a class, have a chat with the school and read the terms before you book.

Here are the 8 questions, and how to find out whether the answers hold up.

In short

  • Start with yourself: why, when and which style.
  • Ask every school the same questions, so you can compare.
  • Test the answers: take a class, book a call and read the terms in writing.
  • A clear answer is a good sign. A vague answer is one more question.
  • There’s no single right training. There’s the one that fits you right now.

Which questions should you ask yourself?

1. Why do I want to do a yoga teacher training?

Do you want to teach? Or do you want to understand your own practice better? Both are good reasons. But your answer changes what you should look for. If you want to teach, ask a lot about how much you’ll practise teaching. If you mostly want to go deeper, look at subjects like philosophy, anatomy and breathwork.

Not sure? Try this: what do you want to be able to do in a year that you can’t do today?

2. Does the format fit my life right now?

Some trainings run on weekends over several months. Others are packed into a few weeks. Neither is better. Ask yourself:

  • Can I keep my weekends free for a longer stretch?
  • Can I take a few weeks off in a row?
  • How much time do I have for homework and my own practice?
  • What do the people I live with think?

We wrote more about this choice in Weekend or intensive yoga teacher training in Copenhagen? and Yoga teacher training while working full time.

3. Do I like the style?

A yoga teacher training is often built on one style, such as Vinyasa, hatha or yin. You’ll spend a lot of hours with it. So it helps to actually like it.

If you’re not sure what you like, read which type of yoga should I choose? and try a few different classes.

Which questions should you ask the school?

4. Are you registered with Yoga Alliance, and how are the 200 hours split?

Many schools are registered with Yoga Alliance as an RYS 200. That means you can apply to become an RYT 200 afterwards. It isn’t required to teach in Denmark, but it’s good to know what you’re getting.

Ask how the hours are split, too. How many are with the teachers? How many are homework and your own practice? More in how to become a yoga teacher in Denmark.

5. What’s included in the price, and what do the terms say?

Don’t just look at the number. Ask:

  • Is the price with or without VAT, and does VAT apply to me?
  • Is there a booking fee, and is it part of the price?
  • Are the manual, exam and certificate included? And classes during the training?
  • Can I pay in instalments?
  • What do I get back if I cancel, and when? What happens if the school cancels?

Ask for the terms in writing. And read them before you pay.

6. Who teaches, and how many of us will there be?

Ask who the lead trainer is, and who teaches anatomy, philosophy and breathwork. Ask how big the group will be. A small group gives more time for each person. A bigger group gives you more people to practise on. What matters most is that you know in advance.

Ask about language too. Are the teaching and the manual in the same language? If you want to train in English, read yoga teacher training in English in Copenhagen.

7. How will I be assessed, and how much will I teach along the way?

Ask how the exam works. Do you teach a full class? Are there assignments along the way? What happens if you don’t pass the first time?

And ask how much you teach before the exam. You learn to teach by doing it. Again and again.

8. What happens when the training ends?

Do you get a certificate? Help getting started? A chance to practise on real classes? A follow-up chat? That’s where many new teachers need the most support.

How do you test the answers?

The questions are only half of it. The other half is how it feels.

  • Take a class. Go to regular classes at the studio. Do you like the atmosphere, the teachers and the room?
  • Book a call. Most schools offer a short chat. Use your questions. Notice whether you get clear answers.
  • Get the material. Many schools have an intro, a webinar or a section of the manual. It gives you a feel for the level.
  • Read the terms. All the way through. Including the small print.

If a school can’t answer clearly, ask again. It’s your money and your time. And if you’d like to know why we chose Vinyasa as the base for our training, read why choose a Vinyasa yoga teacher training.

FAQ

How do I choose the right yoga teacher training?

Ask every school the same questions: Yoga Alliance and how the hours are split, price and terms, teachers and group size, the exam and what happens afterwards. Then take a class, book a call and read the terms.

What should I ask before booking a yoga teacher training?

Ask about the format, absence, how the 200 hours are split, what’s included in the price, cancellation terms, who teaches, how many of you there are, how the exam works and what support you get afterwards.

Does it matter if the school is registered with Yoga Alliance?

It isn’t required to teach in Denmark. But if you train at an RYS 200 school, you can apply to become an RYT 200 afterwards, and many studios know that standard.

Should I try a class before choosing a yoga teacher training?

Yes, ideally. You’ll spend many hours with the style and the teachers. Take some regular classes at the studio so you know whether you like the atmosphere.

What if I can’t decide between weekend and intensive?

Look at your calendar and your everyday life. Weekends suit you if you work or study alongside. Intensive suits you if you can take time off for a while and want to be fully immersed.
