Can yoga help with stress and sleep?
By yum · Updated 2 November 2026
For many people, yoga is a good way to find some calm in a busy life. Slow movement, slower breathing and an hour without a screen give body and mind a break, and many people find it easier to wind down in the evening. But yoga isn’t a treatment. If you’ve been stressed for a long time, or you’ve slept badly for weeks, talk to your doctor.
That’s the honest answer. Not a miracle. Just a good habit that makes being human a little easier.
In short
- Yoga is a pause where you move gently and breathe slowly. Many people find it relaxing.
- Slow styles like yin, restorative and yoga nidra are good when you need calm.
- Some days you need to move first and settle after. That’s fine too.
- A short, calm routine in the evening can be a nice way to say “the day is done”.
- Yoga doesn’t replace your doctor. If stress or poor sleep lasts, get help.
Can yoga help with stress?
Yoga can’t remove what’s stressing you. The deadlines, the inbox and the full calendar are still there when you roll up your mat.
But many people find yoga gives them breathing space. For an hour, you don’t have to do anything except be there. You feel your body, you breathe a bit slower, and your thoughts get a chance to quiet down. That can make the rest of the day easier to meet with a calmer mind.
And then there’s being together. When your phone is in your bag and you’re in a room with real people doing the same thing as you, something happens. You don’t have to say a word. Just being there is enough.
If you’re living in Denmark and struggling with stress, you’ll find guidance in English on lifeindenmark.borger.dk and from your own doctor.
Which yoga is best when you’re stressed?
There’s no single right one. It depends on how the stress shows up in you.
- When you’re tired and empty: Choose something slow. Yin yoga, restorative yoga and yoga nidra, where you lie down and are guided, make room to rest.
- When you’re restless and can’t sit still: Sometimes lying still is hard. A calm flow can work better. You move first, and settling afterwards gets easier.
- When you don’t know what you need: Try both. It’s completely normal for it to change from week to week.

Can yoga help you sleep better?
Many people find it easier to fall asleep after a calm yoga class or a short evening routine. That makes sense. You move gently, you slow down, and you give yourself a signal that the day is ending.
Yoga nidra is popular for exactly this. You lie down while a teacher guides you through your body and breath. Many people get very relaxed. Some fall asleep. That’s completely okay.
But yoga isn’t a cure for insomnia. If you’ve slept badly for a long time, talk to your doctor.
A simple 10-minute evening routine
Try this on an evening you’d otherwise spend scrolling. Only do what feels good. If something hurts, stop.
- Seated breathing (2 min): Sit comfortably. Breathe in through your nose for about 4 seconds and out slowly for about 6. Let the exhale be a little longer than the inhale.
- Child’s pose (2 min): Knees on the floor, hips towards your heels, forehead on the floor or a cushion. Let your back be heavy.
- Lying twist (2 min, 1 per side): Lie on your back, draw your knees in and let them fall gently to one side. Switch.
- Legs up the wall (3 min): Lie with your hips close to a wall and your legs resting up it. Arms relaxed.
- Just lie there (1 min): Notice where your body touches the floor. That’s all.
If you’re pregnant, injured or unsure, check with your doctor or midwife first, or talk to the teacher before class.
When should I talk to a doctor?
Talk to your doctor if stress or poor sleep goes on for weeks, if it affects your work, relationships or daily life, or if you simply sense that something isn’t the way it usually is. Yoga can be a good addition. It isn’t a replacement for help.
Why is it easier with other people?
You can absolutely do yoga at home. But it’s easy to skip when the sofa calls and the inbox blinks.
A class gives you a fixed date with yourself. Someone expects you. A room where you don’t have to do anything else. And afterwards, if you like, a cup of tea in the café with someone you’ve seen on the mat next to yours a few times. It isn’t therapy. It’s just good.
