The studio

The YTT at yum was a very intense, but great experience. I’ve learned so much from 3 very different teachers that are all experts in their field, in a short period of time. I didn’t think I’d have the confidence to teach a class, but I’m positive that it’s possible now. We’ve really grown fond of each other and formed a strong bond between students. Coming together at a beautiful location with yummy food and drinks every weekend really loosened up the sometimes long and intensive training days.

FAQ

Why Vinyasa?

Why Vinyasa?

Vinyasa Krama (often shortened to Vinyasa) origins from the Sanskrit roots. “Vi“ means order,
”nyasa” means placement and the root yui (which is also the root of yoga itself) means “to join” or “connection”. Krama, means “succession” or “change”.

In other words, Vinyasa is a sequential movement between poses, synchronised with the breath. When movements and breath are joined together, this creates a state of flow and connection between the body and the mind. It’s important to understand that the true meaning of Vinyasa is much broader than a few planned sequences. Instead, it is a set of actions that systematically allow a student to move from one point to another. Any sequence performed in a dynamic manner in combination with the breath is a Vinyasa and in that way, Vinyasa yoga helps to cultivate an awareness that links each action to the next—on the mat and in our lives. Thereby, Vinyasa Krama also refers to the ancient principles of sequencing which is the foundation for truly skilled, compelling and powerful teaching.

In this Vinyasa teacher training, you will explore and learn various methodologies to create a solid foundation for creating a complete and full Vinyasa yoga practice.

Subjects covered during the 200H Vinyasa Yoga Teacher Training:

  • In-depth functional and applied anatomy and physiology
  • Physical and bio-mechanic considerations to safe and effective sequencing
  • In-depth alignment and technical considerations of asanas
  • Principles and elements of an Arc Vinyasa class
  • Sequencing in practice
  • Yoga History
  • Yoga Philosophy
  • Pranayama practices, theory and practicum
  • Meditation practices, theory and practicum

As Vinyasa is one of the most difficult styles to learn, we’ve chosen this as a strategic starting point for you to get some qualitative and strong skills that will make it easy for you to develop with other styles. Basically, we find the Vinyasa foundational training to be your best starting point!

What you'll learn

What can you expect to learn?

Q: Is your yoga teacher training just about getting a certificate?
A: A yoga teacher training should never be about gaining – or giving away – a title. Yoga is a tradition and a practice that should be honored and we take it serious to make sure you’ll learn what’s needed for you to honor the tradition. “It’s not only about touching your toes, it’s about what you learn on the way down” (as Jigar Gor said).

Q: What are the main themes covered during the training?
A: Here’s a glimpse of the key topics you’ll explore:

  1. Yoga Anatomy & Physiology
Learn from Marianne Agerskov, PhD Medical Doctor, as she teaches the mechanics of the body and their connection to yoga, including:

    • Anatomy fundamentals (bones, joints, ligaments, muscles, fascia, etc.)
    • Biomechanics of major joints in relation to asana
    • Breathing physiology and the cardiovascular system
    • The nervous system and neuromuscular control
  2. Yoga Philosophy & Humanities
Taught by Agni Deep Rijal, a yogic scholar from Nepal, you’ll delve into:

    • Yoga history and philosophy (e.g., the Yoga Sutras, Eight Limbs of Yoga, koshas, gunas, chakras)
    • Pranayama and meditation practices
  3. Sequencing & Asana Alignments
Guided by Kostis Argouslidis, a seasoned teacher, you’ll master:

    • Creating effective class sequences
    • The arc structure of a yoga class
    • Voice, cuing, and professionalism
    • Advanced asana techniques and alignments
  4. Hands-On Adjustments & Playful Movement
Led by Max Novelli, you’ll explore:

    • Techniques for safe, effective hands-on adjustments
    • Creative, playful approaches to movement and practice

What to expect

yum is all about people: you, feeling good, balanced, joyful. With a great deal of respect to community and tradition, we approach everything from yoga philosophy to everyday life with a smile on our face, a blink in our eyes, and an ambition to create quality relationships and quality learning. The question is, how will you see this reflected in yum’s Vinyasa 200H YTT?

Becoming an authentic yoga teacher

One of the primary roles of a yoga teacher is to show students a yogic pathway and offer them guidance along that path. Doing this with inspiration, knowledge, skill, patience, compassion, and creativity defines a good teacher. The many elements of teaching: creating a safe space for self-exploration, crafting class sequences that take students on physical and energetic journeys, cueing students in their process of refinement, offering practical guidance in meditation, offering examples for extending the practice off the mat, all collectively lead to the same thing: yoga as an unending process to self-discovery and self-transformation; a process for awakening to the truth of one’s being. In this process, teachers are facilitators and guides who offer insightful encouragement to each student along his or her unique path as it evolves, breath by breath.

Yoga is increasingly popular as an accessible and globalised practice for cultivating overall physical and mental health well-being, which is also usually why students come to their mats in the first place. The experiences we have during our yoga practice gradually help us to refine our personal practice and provide insights into how we might understand yoga, translate it into our everyday lives, and best share the practice with others.

In our perspective, however, everyone can become a yoga teacher on paper. Becoming a skilled teacher is not to be taken lightly, and it takes effort, curiosity, training and an open mind.

Therefore, we respectfully induce the YTT with a high amount of ambition; an ambition to give you the best physical, communicational and spiritual groundworks, so you are able to evolve and become a competent teacher. A yoga teacher who not only preaches yoga, but lives yoga.

Also, we have an ambition on your behalf, to go into this experience with dedication and presence to get the very best out of it. Do not expect this training to be only zen and well-being. There will be lots of this – but there will also be an expectation for you to put in the work required so we can send you into the world with a valid and professional certificate in your hand. One that you can be truly proud of having worked for!

A space to be who you are

yum is a heart-warming and welcoming space and we love everyone who sets their foot here. Difference and diversity is highly valued, and actually an aim for us when defining our classes and our teacher team.

While a few yoga styles insist that they offer the true, original, best, most effective, or otherwise most ideal approach, there is no absolutely correct or incorrect sequence. Rather, different sequences make more or less sense in terms of how yoga works for different people in various life situations and conditions, what is being emphasised in a particular style or tradition of yoga, or with respect to the intention of an individual student or teacher.

Thus, yoga teachers have tremendous freedom in designing and teaching different sequences. Freedom that also carries responsibility in ensuring that the sequences are sensible. In crafting sequences that give structure, coherence, meaning, and transformative potential to yoga classes, you have the opportunity to draw from and apply everything you have and will learn about yoga, from anatomy to philosophy, from asana to pranayama and from self-acceptance to self-realisation

Requirements

  • Maximum absence rate throughout the training: 16H Depending on your experience, individual agreements might be possible in case you are not able to attend all days. Please contact us at yoga@yum.dk if you are not sure if you can meet this requirement.
  • 50H Self-Practice during the period of the training (approximately 150H will be with the teachers for theoretical and practical teaching)
  • The language will be English, including the manual. Therefore, understanding both written and spoken English is a requirement
  • You will be expected to prepare homework in between the weekends

If the requirements are not fulfilled, or if it’s evaluated that you are not ready to start teaching, we reserve the right to withhold your certificate when the course ends. If this is the case, we will grant you a maximum of two re-examinations further ahead in time. You should follow the guidelines and evaluations given at the exam and strive to improve to the requested standards.

The exam: The training will end with an exam where you will be asked to prepare a maximum of 30 minutes of class teaching, including a pranayama and/or a meditation, and a sequence. Along with this, smaller assignments will be handed to you throughout the training to assess your level and development.

Your certificate

When you’ve met all requirements, followed through with the training, and passed the certification, you will be handed an exclusive yum 200H yoga teacher training certificate giving you access to teach yoga yourself through studios and/or own initiatives.

The certificate will show that you have been trained at a RYS200 yoga school, designated by Yoga Alliance, and this will provide you with the opportunity to become a RYT (Registered Yoga Teacher) or E-RYT (Experience Registered Yoga Teacher) after the training.

Yoga Alliance certification

At yum, we are ambitious on behalf of the yoga community, and we want to participate in the community by securing that the great traditions and learnings of yoga will be transferred from person to person with integrity, authenticity and competency. We do not offer a quality that is not to the best of standards in the industry.

Regarding Yoga Alliance, it is our belief that it is good to have an international institute securing that the quality of teacher trainings around the world reach certain standards. However, many Copenhagen studios are not Registered Yoga Schools, and they do note necessarily require teachers to be Registered Yoga Teachers by Yoga Alliance, as Yoga Alliance is not to be considered the only valid proof of quality and ethical standards.

yum is now a Registered Yoga School in which provides students with a certainty that the training meets international standards, and furthermore it gives teachers the opportunity to continue their journey with a RYT certification. We do not require teachers to hold the Registered Yoga Teacher stamp on their certificates either, as we believe there are many ways into becoming a great, qualitative yoga teacher. We always look into the background of the teacher, the schools teachers have been trained, the number of hours practiced/teached in total, and other relevant experience or training that adds to the teachers competency as a yoga teacher. Also, human skills and interest in creating good things for the community is an important factor.
